This is the most important city in Pindi Plain of the potwar plateau. It is situated on the bank of Grand Trunk Road, at a distance of 108 miles form Peshawar and 179 miles from Lahore. It has road links with Murree and areas of Kashmir. Besides this city has Railway, Road and Air links with the other parts of the country. due to increase in population a new residential area satellite town along the Murree Road, has been developed.

Rawalpindi is not only a busiest center of trade and commerce, it has also become an important industrial center, Many industries such as cotton Texti8le, Electrical goods, chemical, cement, oil refinery printing and publishing etc., have been establishes here. In 1998, the population of this city was 14,00,000 persons.

Although Islamabad and Rawalpindi are independent cites, they are often regarded as twin cities, because of their physical proximity. This distance between the two is about 9 Miles and with the expansion of the built up area the seem to be one unit. Rawalpindi Air Port serves both these cites. Both are very different in construction. Islamabad mainly serves the purpose of Capital and Administration,  while Rawalpindi is a multi-functional city.
