PIA
Air transport has probably never been more important to the development
of a country than in the case of Pakistan. It was back in 1946 when
Pakistan was still in the embryonic stage that Mr. Mohammad Ali Jinnah
instructed Mr. M.A. Ispahani to set up a national airline. With his
singular vision, Mr. Jinnah saw that with the formation of divided
Pakistan, West and East (bow Bangladesh) Pakistan, separated by 1100
miles, a swift and efficient mode of transport was vital. |

The new airline was born on 23rd October 1946 and called Orient Airways
Ltd. In 1954, the airline acquired it's first Super-constellation (AP-AFQ)
and started its regular direct service between West and East Pakistan.
As demand grew, the government decided to form a stat owned airline and
invited Orient Airways to merge with it. The outcome of the merge was
the creation of Pakistan International Airlines (PIA). |
